Case Studies
So how does StudioLiveTV help people in the real world? Here are some hypothetical case studies that we believe anyone can relate to.
Ingrid H.
Club Member
Background
Ingrid H. is an advertising executive and mother of two teenage children living in the New York suburbs. She attends Metro Fitness because of its convenient location along the route she takes every evening from the village commuter rail station to her home. For the past six years she has been participating in a spin class offered by the gym three times per week.
Challenge
Ingrid loves spin, but she can’t do it on her own. For the past few years her instructor’s familiar shouts of encouragement during the workout has motivated Ingrid to make it to the end of her hour-long exercise. Recently Ingrid has been promoted and her career is demanding more of her time than ever before. No longer does she have the luxury of “checking out” once she takes her seat on the train. Now she is constantly tapped for unplanned conference calls and crisis management. This comes with the territory, but when a call came in from her CEO five minutes before her spin class, the only hour she seems to ever have to herself, she nearly lost it.
Solution
Watching her on the phone, sitting on the bench for the duration of the class, the receptionist at Metro Fitness knew exactly what would make Ingrid’s day. She told her about StudioLiveTV, the new system Metro had installed earlier that week. It records classes and allows members who can’t attend class the option of watching on their own time. After just two minutes of getting it set up, Ingrid was sitting on a bike watching the class she’d just missed on her blackberry and listening in with her headset.
Value
Ingrid can now rest assured that her sacred spin class can never be taken away from her. Although there is nothing like the real deal, being able to do her exercise while hearing her instructor’s shouts of encouragement on a recording is much better for Ingrid than having to pack it up and go home because of a last minute conference call.
Sarah W.
Club Member
Background
Sarah W. is a single, 28 year old junior financial analyst living and working in Manhattan with 70 hour workweeks. She also spends up to 30% of her time on the road. Although she is very busy, staying in shape is one of her major priorities in life. Since she moved to New York as a graduate student five years ago, every morning she has been taking classes from Wendy, a yoga instructor who has become somewhat of a mentor for Sarah. Wendy’s support gives Sarah just as much strength as the workout itself.
Challenge
Sarah was in Los Angeles for a week of meetings. She went three days without yoga and desperately needed her class. The hotel where she was staying offered a daily class, but she didn’t feel like it was anything close to what she gets from Wendy.
Solution
Knowing how much she hates to miss class, Sarah was the first person Wendy called with the news that her club had signed up for StudioLiveTV. The next morning at 6:00 AM, with her iPad propped up on the desk in her hotel room, Sarah participated in her New York yoga class that had occurred two hours earlier.
Value
Sarah can now travel anywhere in the world – in any time zone – and bring Wendy’s class with her. This means that no matter where her job takes her, Sarah can always count on getting both the physical and moral support she needs to get through her hectic day.
Saul A.
Club Member
Background
Saul A. is a semiretired, 62 year-old journalist, who for nine months out of the year lives with his wife in New York City. The couple spends their summers on the beach in Maine. Saul has struggled with obesity his entire life. Six months ago his doctor told him if he didn’t get himself in shape now, he wouldn’t make it to his 70th birthday. Saul and his wife took the doctor’s warning very seriously and found Jeff, a personal trainer, who works with Saul one-on-one and also teaches a group fitness class for other people in Saul’s situation.
Challenge
As summer approached a couple months ago, Saul and Jeff began to worry about the upcoming long lapse in his physical therapy program. Saul had been making a lot of progress since he started, but he still had a long way to go. He was constantly telling his wife and friends that although he was working hard, Jeff’s regimen and encouragement is what got him out of the house and to the gym every morning. Unfortunately the town where Saul’s family spends the summers is very rural and there is no decent gym nearby. He considered staying in the city, but was torn because summer in Maine is when he gets the most quality time with his daughters and three grandchildren.
Solution
After hearing about StudioLiveTV, Jeff immediately signed up. Saul is not the only client he has who skips town in the summer, so the program makes perfect sense. Jeff worked with Saul on acquiring a user account through his studio’s online portal and he showed him how to access his classes live with his laptop. So far everything has been going well for Saul this June and he plans to keep up with Jeff via StudioLiveTV in July and August from his house in Maine.
Value
Saul now believes that StudioLiveTV has saved both his summer and his health. The program meant that he didn’t have to make the tough decision between spending quality time with his grandkids and sticking to his regimen. He knows that if it wouldn’t have been for those StudioLiveTV classes with Jeff, he would have lost his motivation while he was in Maine. The consequences of that are unthinkable. Now Saul likes to say he got to have his cake and eat it too. Well, okay, he jokes, maybe not cake, but rice cakes.
Pine Street Fitness
Club Owner
Background
Located in the heart of the Financial District, Pine Street Fitness is a high end club catering to investment bankers, brokers, and other Wall Street professionals in the neighborhood. Location is Pine Street’s biggest asset. Members love it because it is within a stone’s throw of the office. Complimentary juice-bars, high thread count Egyptian towels, state-of-the-art equipment, and classes taught by some of the country’s best trainers are among the many investments the club’s owners have made to keep their demanding members happy and returning each month.
Challenge
The club’s location, although in many ways advantageous, also has its drawbacks. Due to the nature of Wall Street, turnover for Pine Street Fitness is much higher than at clubs in the suburbs. Members decide they prefer to workout closer to home, they have kids, their schedules change, etc. For Pine Street this means lost revenue as they must continuously spend money on finding new members to replace those who are leaving.
Solution
With the initial reason of staying on top of trends to keep their exigent members happy, Pine Street Fitness signed up for StudioLiveTV. The program allows members to remotely view recordings of classes from anywhere at any time.
Value
Pine Street management was thrilled to learn that signing up with StudioLiveTV would not only generate revenue, but would also take a noticeable bite out of their turnover problem. Members who had moved to the suburbs were happy to be able to maintain the regularity of scheduled classes taught by their favorite instructors – even if it meant they were not able to physically be at the gym every day. Members whose schedules had become even more demanding benefited from the flexibility of being able to take part in their workout from their office or hotel room. Whereby it may have been conceivable to cancel membership before, StudioLiveTV provides members with the extra incentive of bridging the gap between only being able to come to the club once a week (high risk of cancelation) and being able to actively engage in Pine Street activities on a daily basis (lower risk of cancelation). With measurable ROI, Pine Street considers StudioLiveTV to be one of the few ‘frill’ or ‘trendy’ investments that has noticeably made the club more money.
